Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It is based upon the syntactic combination of lexicals and names that are drawn from very large (usually >10,000 different words) vocabularies. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. These vocabularies, the syntax which structures them, and their set of speech sound units, differ creating the existence of many thousands of different types of mutually unintelligible human languages. Human speakers (polyglots) are often able to communicate in two or more of them. The vocal abilities that enable humans to produce speech also provide humans with the ability to sing.

A gestural form of human communication exists for the deaf in the form of sign language. Speech in some cultures has become the basis of a written language, often one that differs in its vocabulary, syntax and phonetics from its associated spoken one, a situation called diglossia. Speech in addition to its use in communication, it is suggested by some psychologists such as Vygotsky is internally used by mental processes to enhance and organize cognition in the form of an interior monologue.

Speech is researched in terms of the speech production and speech perception of the sounds used in spoken language. Other research topics concern speech repetition, the ability to map heard spoken words into the vocalizations needed to recreated that plays a key role in the vocabulary expansion in children and speech errors. Several academic disciplines study these including acoustics, psychology, speech pathology, linguistics, cognitive science, communication studies, otolaryngology and computer science. Another area of research is how the human brain in its different areas such as the Broca's area and Wernicke's area underlies speech.

It is controversial how far human speech is unique in that other animals also communicate with vocalizations. While none in the wild uses syntax nor compatibly large vocabularies, research upon the nonverbal abilities of language trained apes such as Washoe and Kanzi raises the possibility that they might have these capabilities.

The origins of speech are unknown and subject to much debate and speculation.

What is the difference between a speech evaluation and a speech LD screen?
Q. My son has a TBI and his speech evaluations say he has the speech/language capabilities of a 5yr old. When I requested he have speech in school the school evaluated him and said he does not qualify with scores of expressive/receptive mid 80's. But his speech eval said low 60's. His Doctors are requesting he have speech. What should I do?

A. I agree with jdeekdee in asking for an IEE (Independant Educational Evaluation) at public expense. First though, have you provided the doctors requests in writing stating that they are requesting that he have speech? Always keep the original of anything like that and provide the school with a copy, but they need this request in writing. Also, unlike jdeekdee, I have heard of districts taking a parent to a due process hearing. However, this is unusal. Since you have doctors backing your position, you will get the IEE regardless of whether it's via a simple request or a hearing. Once you send the letter requesting the IEE, don't respond to any phone calls about the letter. Any response should be in writing. If they do call, simply state… [cont.]

What is a good speech topic for a five minute powerpoint presentation?
Q. I'm in college and I have to do a five minute informative speech for my speech class. The speech has to have a power point presentation and informative...I need help picking a topic!

A. Pick something that interests you. When I had a five minute PowerPoint presentation, I chose to do mine on why not to have an abortion. I did this because I feel strongly about this issue. Make sure you do your research and find Internet site to place on one slide that you can give as references. Also books, magazines, any kind of reference should be acknowledged at the end of you PowerPoint. Just make sure you do your presentation on something that you know or want to know about, research it then do your power point. My hardest part was giving the presentation not making it. Good luck and I hope this helps.

What's the difference between free speech and spam?
Q. I think nowhere does it become more apparent than the internet , where we consider certain types of speech unproductive, repetitive, robotic, and unnecessary (thus justifiably worthy of censorship). Is censorship always wrong then? Or is it just a matter of social opinion what speech is considered acceptable?

A. Its slightly a matter of social opinion but there are boundaries. Basically most speech is protected under the first amendment. If the government wants to regulate it they have to show that the regulation is necessary to achieve a "compelling" government interest. This is very difficult to prove and rarely will apply. However, some classes of speech are deemed to be unprotected, such as obscenity, words that incite immediate danger of unlawful activity, etc. There are strict guidelines as to what fits each of these types as well. Also the validity of speech regulations depends on whether the regulation is content based or content neutral. Most Internet speech is commercial. This speech, if truthful is protected, but can be regulated by non- [cont.]
